Several key issues may determine the long-term success of ecological restoration efforts. Critical aspects include species selection, community engagement, and adequate resources. Research at Southern Cross University demonstrates how mixed-species plantings can offer efficiencies in water utilization, nutrition and wood production. Community engagement is often overlooked, but may be a critical success factor. The utility of participatory modelling and action research to inform and engage communities is illustrated through case studies.
