The chemical constituents from the endophytic fungi of important medicinal plants, Melia azedarach, Ginkgo biloba, and Salvia miltiorrhiza, and their biological activities were systematically studied. More than 300 compounds were isolated from over ten plant endophytes. The structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D-, 2D-NMR and X-ray, the absolute configurations of some compounds were also identified by combined computational chemistry and ECD calculations. The bioactive studies showed that some compounds displayed toxicity against brine shrimp or antifungal activties against important phytopathogenic fungi. What is more, “One Strain - Many Compounds (OSMAC)” strategy was used to induce the production of more metabolites from Chaetomium globosum and Aspergillus fumigatus by cultivation, and over 100 compounds were obtained. This study lays the theoretical foundation for the reasonable exploitation and utilization of plant endophyte, and provides the material basis for searching for important biopesticidal and medicinal leads from the symbiotic system of “plant-endophyte”.
