Plant phenotyping, the technology to measure plant morphology, plant physiology and chemical components, is the core evaluation criterion for both smart breeding and smart planting. Breeding selection is the process of comparing which genotype material has the best phenotype (yield, variety, resistance et al) under given growth environment conditions. Smart planting is the process of creating ideal growth environment conditions for selected varieties to maximize their genetic advantages. In the process of moving from Breeding 3.0 to Breeding 4.0 (Smart Breeding) era, genotyping data will increase stably while phenotyping data in different environments will grow explosively. Biotechnology and plant phenotyping are the "two wings of wisdom" of intelligent breeding, and phenomics has gradually become a key bottleneck technology due to the constraints of artificial intelligence algorithms, computer computing power, and interdisciplinary talents. Starting from the basic concepts of plant phenotyping and phenomics, this presentation systematically explains how plant phenotyping has become a bottleneck technology in the era of smart breeding and planting, and gives examples of how modern multi-scale plant phenotyping technology can accelerate the era of smart breeding and planting.
