1998-2000Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW) Post Doctoral Fellow
Research Interests:
Filley is by training an organic geochemist and stable isotope geochemist. His field and laboratory studies investigate organic matter transformations in litter, soil, and aquatic fractions within natural and intensively managed landscapes. He uses stable isotopes, the physical and chemical separation of soil and aquatic matter, and plant (e.g. lignin, substituted fatty acids) and microbial (e.g. amino sugars and phospholipids) biomarkers to track source, metabolic pathways, and the processing of natural organic matter in soils and sediments. He co-manages a biogeochemistry stable isotope and structural mass spectrometry facility at Purdue University.
Professional Activities:
Elected as National Program Chair for the Geochemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (2007-2008).
U.S. Director of the U.S.-China Ecopartnership for Environmental Sustainability-2012-2016
