  Education Background:

PhD Cell and Molecular Biology, Stanford University   Jan 2008

BS   Biology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill    Apr 2002  summa cum laude, with Honors

  Working Experience:

Assistant Professor  Department of Biology, The Pennsylvania State University Dec 2011 - present     Research Focus: Cell Wall Dynamics in Plants Using the Arabidopsis thaliana   and Brachypodium distachyon Model Systems

Postdoctoral Research   Energy Biosciences Institute, University of California Berkeley Feb 2008 - Nov 2011 Postdoctoral Research: Cell Wall Expansion and Biosynthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana Advisor: Chris Somerville

PhD   Department of Biology, Stanford University Sep 2002 - Jan 2008   Thesis Research: Biogenesis and Function of Primary Cilia in Mammalian Cells     Advisor: Tim Stearns

Undergraduate   Department of Biology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Aug 1998 - May 2002       Honors Thesis Research: Characterization of p120catenin in Drosophila Advisor: Mark Peifer

  Research Interests:

My laboratory studies the dynamics of plant cell walls, including their synthesis, modification, degradation, and recycling, with the goal of informing efforts to sustainably produce food, materials, and bioenergy from plants. My current research interests include the trafficking of cellulose synthase and de novo cell wall formation during cytokinesis in plant cells, the functions of pectin-degrading enzymes in plant cell growth and organ development, functional interactions between pectins and cellulose during cell wall synthesis and modification, the identification and characterization of new genes involved in cell wall expansion using activation tag screening, and tracking wall component delivery and dynamics in living plant cells using click chemistry-based metabolic labeling.

  Honors and Professional Activities:

Tombros Fellow of the Center for Excellence in Science Education   2015

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship   2002-05

  Stanford Graduate Fellowship  2002-05

Highest Honors in Biology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  2002
